“Ten Thoughts About Ranch Horses and the Resurgence of the CowHorse Industry in Australia”

1. Know the rules
– Events can be run under a number of different associations, typically AQHA or NRCHA rules – there aren’t too many differences, but you need to understand what the rules are.

2. Think about the intent of the ranch horse classes
– To demonstrate a horse who is an asset to your work and is a pleasure to ride. Move forward

3. Show the horse you have not the one you want

4. Show your strengths, hide your weaknesses
– at home do the opposite. Ranch horse events involve a variety of skills, identify what you’re good at and show that off, be aware of your weak points and manage those.

5. Light contact
– there are no points for draped reins, light contact is encouraged but avoid holding a horse in frame. Stay soft with your hands, a good judge will be able to tell the difference between a horse in self-carriage and one being forced.

6. Understand obstacles
– Efficiency is key here, we don’t want to have lots of stop start but do want the horses to wait for our cues.

7. Practice transitions
– Every event requires transitions of some form and having great transitions is a huge advantage, especially downwards transitions.

8. Multitask
– you need to be able to ride while working obstacles such as gates or a rope, working a cow or following a pattern, horsemanship needs to be second nature.

9. Enter everything

10. Have fun and ask questions!
