“Ten Tips for Improving Your Cross-Country Riding”

1 –  Walking the horse properly
What you should be looking at; route markers; good lines; walk all alternatives (regardless of where you think you will be jumping)

2 – Know Your Horse!
– Individual jump style and stride length will effect how you ride each fence.  Pay attention to the terrain, conditions and how it will effect the distances for you horse.

3 – Rhythm and balance
– The most important aspect of good cross country riding!  Practice riding at faster speed and maintaining rhythm; links back to your basic training

4 – Riding to time
Time savers (links in with above point); approaches and landing where most time lost; setting up and moving away

5 – Start and Finish

6 -Accuracy – Narrow Fences or Corners
How to practice at home

7 – Water
How to introduce the young/novice horse to water … and make it fun.  A proper initial education will avoid future issues

8 – Tips for jumping ditches
As for water, the right initial approach will avoid issues later on

9 – Practice
In the arena for accuracy – can recreate features in arena (lines, angles, bounces, corners, narrow, ditches etc.)

9a – Practice Part 2!
Also need to practice general terrain riding plus on cross country course especially young/novice horses or riders to understand effects of terrain on what you have practiced in the arena; consistency builds confidence

10 – You, the Rider!
How you ride; balance; stirrups; commitment; fitness
