“Ten Tips To Help Improve Your Jumping Performance”

(The principles will apply to both show jumping and cross country)

1. Get the basics right
– Yes that means dressage! Flatwork helps jumping (and vice versa)
– Straightness; contact; canter; shortening/lengthening (links in with 2 and 3 below)

2. Rhythm and balance
– Transitions, engagement, improving the canter; riding the corners

3. Its all about the “before and after”
– Quality of approach and departure almost more important than the jump! Let the fences come to you
– don’t focus too hard on trying to see a stride, let the horse learn to adapt

4. Pole work
– Building on above; adjustability; confidence; straightness; lines; riders eye

5. Grids and gymnastic exercises
– Different set ups help different problems eg shape/ stop rushing/correct leads etc. Don’t be afraid to
keep revisiting the basics. Also helps with rider balance and position as can leave horse alone (but as
with poles need expert help with someone who knows – one size doesn’t fit all with horses, poles and
grids!)

6. Practice riding lines, multiple fences and courses
– Bending lines; straight lines; courses; thinking ahead; ACCURACY

7. Spooky fences
– Introduce fillers, water trays, bright fences at home; start slow and small; always go over don’t let
think can go around

8. Your position
– Balance; leg position, seat and hands (again pole work and grids help)

9. Walking the course properly
– Not just about which way to go! Related distances; know your horses stride; sideline distractions, use
and ride through the corners etc

10. Confidence – don’t rush things!
– Focus on 1-8 and horse has confidence in its ability, in you, in jumping and how to get itself out of
trouble.
– Don’t be in a hurry – consolidate experience and confidence at each level before rushing through the
grades – will minimise issues later on as the courses get bigger!
