Equine Wound Wisdom with Amanda Edwards

“When I was around 13, our wonderful pony, Flash, colicked and needed emergency surgery. Back then, we did everything we thought we had to: keep the horse from rolling—no matter what. That resulted in a broken nose for me! Next, we got him into the horse float, and my dad, along with two of our neighbors, jumped in the back while Mum drove like a maniac down the highway. At one point, the horse flipped upside down, and the men were practically clinging to the sides while Flash left hoofprints on the backside of our second neighbor.

Once the surgery was over, the real work began. My mum didn’t handle medical stuff, so the aftercare fell to me. Flash made a full recovery and lived a long, happy life. That experience sparked my fascination and passion for both horse and human health.

It’s what led me to become a critical care and emergency nurse. Eventually, I turned that curiosity and knowledge toward horse recovery and rehabilitation. Learning gives me a real buzz, and I’m always keen to share what I know with other horse owners to help make the tough times a little easier to navigate.
