“Ten Training Considerations”
1) Manners
– I love horses that have manners and are a pleasure to be around, same as polite people
2) Soreness, some horses that are always cranky. It is worthwhile to have a look at making sure that they are comfortable in their body.
– Alignment from head to tail
3) Underlying lameness issues in mild cases the horses have signs like head bobbing or pig-rooting, it is a good idea to look at their movement patterns and see if they favour one leg over the other, have a preferred stance. (grazing leg) rotations to the body.
4) Horses have different personality; some are boisterous, and in your face, others observe you and are shy, and others are just nervous.
5) Whole horse look at your entire horse, not just the riding lessons
6) Social well being is your horse comfortable where he lives? Does he have friends?
– I have been amazed some horses love open spaces. Others prefer stables, some horses that live near a busy road are used to it
– while other horses that grow up in the country and then move near a busy street, become really unsettled and anxious.
7) Food good diet weight under/ over well balanced sometimes it is worthwhile to have pasture analysed
8) Does he have good feet are the hoofs a good shape, well balanced
9) Tack does your horse gear fit him bridle bit and the saddle, the saddle should be comfortable for both of you.
10) Our body language
– Horses read our body language like deaf people read lips, we need to be aware of how we communicate with our horses, our intentions, our energy, voice tone and volume, the awareness of how we move around them confidently- reassuring, or timed and insecure
Then we start riding them, and that is when the fun begins now we want to move as one. In our chosen discipline and have fun with our partner in crime the horse.
