“Ten Keys to Confidence with Horses”
1) Confidence is considered a soft skill but what is confidence?
– To be sure of one’s self – bold – bravado – awe and intimidate.
– To watch someone else, they always seem full of confidence.
2) Trust and belief in oneself
– Have you practiced a skill or situation and understood it intimately so it’s recalled as second nature? Where do you sit in the circle of trust with your horse, coach, supporters and yourself?
3) Courage
– The quality of the mind that enables you to face difficulty, danger and pain. Now break that down into a small nudge of courage to show your horse and yourself leadership. Knowing courage can’t come without being Vulnerable.
4) Empathy
– The scariest topic of all. Most people find being kind to one’s self a hard path to walk down. Yet if we think of empathy instead of a lack of strength or a show of weakness; but rather simply acknowledging it allows us to try a task. Fail or succeed we can stand on the fact we tried our best and importantly are not white anting our own efforts with self loathing or inappropriate frustration.
5) Understanding De-briefing after lessons and/or competitions
– Rewriting history even when a task has been attempted or completed successfully we can overlay it with failure or fantasy of how it was achieved.
6) Goal Setting
– Resetting and fine tuning. Not allowing your goals (dreams) to be your handbrake for progress. Very goals run anything close to a smooth path. Most need to zig and zag many times over. Change isn’t surrendering your goal merely staying adoptive to the new facts.
7) The basics are still your foundation to all things
– Breath, move your body and stay present.
8) Visualisation
– Mental Rehearsal
– Everything starts as a thought.
9) Positive Affirmations
– Self talk nudge. Helping to overcome self-sabotaging negative thoughts. i.e. Hypervigilance means I can make earlier softer corrections to things going astray rather then being frozen in noise.
10) Know your limits
– Peak arousal and Peak performance. Train for confidence as well as your personal bests.
