“Ten Ways to Help Children Learn Effectively”

1. Coach them don’t teach them!
– Developing what they have

 

2. Have a good frame of reference to evaluate your training and to measure skill growth
– Understand the underlying training

 

3. Give them responsibilities
– Look at speed, directions, position and balance
– Right places, create right circumstances
– Do the right thing

 

4. Don’t underestimate young clients
– Instructions may think beginners are going nowhere

 

5. Break exercises into simple achievable components
– Need more equipment than wings, poles and blocks
– Week 1 – pods (sports cones)
– Week 2 – circle off and on
– Week 3 – take away pods

 

6. Remember that sport involves competition

 

7. Help them understand the idea of a personal best
– Traffic light system – 1-3 red, 4-6 orange and 7-10 green

 

8. Ask them lots of questions

 

9. Give them homework
– Riding once a week
– Resources – diagrams of lessons

 

10. Give them two stars and a wish!
