    – Including mild (inflammatory airway disease) to severe (heaving)

 

  • What horses does Equine Asthma effect?
    – Does not discriminate

 

  • What are signs and symptoms of equine effect?
    – Mild – under 7 years old – decrease in performance may sometimes cough
    – Severe – over 7 years old – coughing, difficulty breathing at rest, heaving in muscles

 

  • What is actually happening in the respiratory system of horses with equine asthma?
    – Smooth muscle

 

  • What causes equine asthma?
    – Man-made
    – Airway irritation – dust, mould (mold) spores

 

  • What can we do  to help prevent or reduce the severity of equine asthma?
    – Reduce dust and mould (mold) spores
    – Feed
    – Exercise

 

  • What medications are commonly used in horses with equine asthma and what do we need to be aware of with their use?
    – Contico steriod (breath/puffer, oral paste/injectable
    – Deplete necessary nutrients
    – Special considerations for stabled horse
    – Feed below chest height
