“Ten Tips To Improve Your Horses Musculoskeletal Health”

To incorporate the following tips (I’ve put a little more information for you in brackets next to each tip):

1. Look at the horse as a whole
(Conformation, posture, consider feet, saddle fit, teeth, nutrition etc)

2. Ride on different surfaces
(For strengthening different structures & improving proprioception)

3. Prevention is better than cure
(Have your horse checked by a therapist regularly. Therapists can pick up minor issues and help to resolve them before they become major issues. Horses are experts at hiding pain, and so often by the time they are displaying symptoms the problem is fairly major and there are also additional compensatory issues)

4. There’s no such thing as a quick fix

5. Consider your speed
(A little bit different to what riders are often told, but from a bio-mechanics & therapy point of view, slowing down shows how straight (or not!) the horse is, and corrective bio-mechanics exercises can be implemented)

6. Groom your horse!
(Great for improving blood flow to muscles, creates a mini massage for sore muscles, allows time for riders to check horses for heat, swellings etc)

7. Listen to your horse.
(Is it that the horse won’t do something or can’t do something? Pay attention to subtle changes in behaviour)

8. Don’t be afraid to consult your vet!
Use experienced & qualified therapists
(What qualifications do they have, do they have insurance, how long have they been working in the industry, do they regularly update their skills? Why should you use a qualified therapist?)

9. Your horses mental health has a big an impact on the body
(Just like us, stress or mental tension can be felt in the body. Ensuring their psychological well-being is just as important as looking after their physical well-being)

10. Look after yourself as much as your horse!
(Riders asymmetries can affect the horse)
