Christoph Hess Discusses Developing the Canter and Working Towards Collected and Extended Trot

  • What are the qualities that we are looking for in the canter?
    – Clear 3 beat rhythm  (4 beat in canter pirouette)
    – Period of suspension
  • In a young horse, how can we tell if their canter will be exceptional?
    – Walk and canter cannot be developed the same way as the trot
    – To get the best canter, ride a lot of transitions (trot – canter – trot (Quality transitions))
    – Lengthen (big strides) on curved line
  • Does an exceptional canter indicate a talented jumping horse?
    – All horse need to be balanced
    – The canter should be well balanced and the horses should be straight
  • At what stage should we have more focus on the straightness in the canter? Or is it like the rainbow?
    – All horses are crooked, you will never have a horse who is totally straight
    – Ride the canter a little bit in shoulder fore.  Give the reins in the transitions, looking for a long movement of suspension

  • What should the rider be working on in the horses’ first year to develop the canter?
    – Young horse should be ridden in rising trot, then sitting trot
    – Young horse should be ridden in light seat in canter shorter strides before canter in dressage seat

  • How should we start to develop the canter? Is training impulsion most important before we train lengthening and shortening?
    – Impulsion first, some horses love to canter, some horses love to trot
    – Train first in the gait the horse loves most

  • What is the judge looking for in the collected canter?
    – Rider should have the feeling of extended medium canter with impulsion
    – More cadence, more uphill with hind legs under horse with impulsion

  • What is the judge looking for in the extended canter?
    – Rider should have the feeling of collection, their horse should be strong from training and not when the horse is too young
    – When the horse is in extension, the rider should give both reins to prove the horse is not leaning on the reins.
    – The horse should be strong and well balanced with a longer neck and ground covering stride

  • To improve our scores in the canter, what type of exercises should we do?
    – The better the horse is trained, the better the score
    – Turn with the outside reins, turning straight lines, smaller circles and pirouettes

  • In our ‘happy hour’ after the competition, do we canter? If so, what exercises should we include?
    – Canter, light seat, show jumping saddle
    – Canter in a way the horse loves it
    – Stretches the neck with self carriage canter
