“Ten Strategies To Prepare For Dressage Competition”
– Learn the test backwards, errors are too costly and unforgivable
– Practice the test – ie ride through it but not too many times. If you can ride it on another horse regardless if it is the same level or not just so you know the flow of the test. eg if the test has half pass and the other horse isn’t at this level ride leg yielding or just across the diagonal. try riding different sections eg just the walk and incorporate it in your training
– Don’t try too hard and then cook the horse, been there done that! Have a relax/ cross training day, go out for a ride
– Take your horse out the week before, have a practice run. You don’t even need to ride the test or do dressage. Don’t make the horse think every time it goes on the float it is pressure and a competition.
– Look after yourself – eat well, get lots of sleep and chillax!
– Have a great team around you or go it alone! Don’t include negative people on your competition day, leave them at home.
– Have a plan for your horse, does it need extra or less food? Does it need more or less work? Does it need any additives? Do you take a buddy or concentrate and compete only 1 horse at a time? Does it need to pee?!? Do you move the float the day before? Each horse is different, get inside their head.
– Have a check list for packing the float, truck or trailer. Be prepared, wash, iron, clean what you can after each show so you aren’t doing it the night before the next one
– Be fit and make sure your horse is. Riding under competition situation is hard work.
– Let go when things go wrong. You can’t control the weather, who is on before you, which judge. If a movement goes pear shape, make the next one better but don’t hold onto the negativity
