“Ten Tips for Teaching a Group Lesson”
Start with a brief intro about group lessons – different scenarios where you may have to teach a group lesson, and the advantages and challenges of group lesson vs private, and what a good group lesson looks like.
The 10 points are what a good group lesson would look like:
1. Remember students’ names
2. Safety and welfare – responsibility, lack of knowledge
3. Be thoughtful about language – thinking student
4. Adapt methods according to class size. – bigger groups practice, bell corridor – canter in rein back out, trot, walk in, halt, walk out.
5. Different goals for casual vs regular – Riding school weekly vs occasional pony club the positive change
6. Get the balance – planning vs adaptability – provide enjoyable experience for the horse
7. Tailor the lesson to ability and fitness of both horses and riders.
8. Clear communication: Explain, prepare, execute,
9. Keep everyone occupied, give equal attention to all riders and avoid lengthy explanations.
10.Learning is through practice and riding simple exercises well.
