About Dr Jane
– Jane is an experienced researcher and Principle Lecturer in equine research, with a passion for enhancing equine performance and welfare through teaching and industry informed real-world research, which generates change. Jane is a qualified veterinary nurse and gained her Masters in Equine Science before completing her doctorate exploring the application of surface electromyography (EMG) as a tool to assess muscle adaptation during training in racehorses and sport horses. She is employed at University Centre Hartpury, an Associate Faculty of the University of the West of England, UK. Jane mainly lectures at postgraduate level, where she leads the Research Process module and is a regular guest lecturer across equine science and therapy modules. Her main areas of professional interest include:
1. Scientific evaluation of equestrian performance, training and wellbeing: including epidemiological analysis of injury related risk factors and prediction of performance, understanding the impact of training and rehabilitation on equine muscle, application of physiological analysis during training, testing the reliability and validity of traditional and emerging training practices and gadgets, and evaluation of the demands of training and competition on horse and rider to ensure training regimens underpin equine health, welfare, performance and career longevity.
2. Rider impacts on equitation: rider personality, rider decision-making, kinematic evaluation of the rider and horse-rider dyad within performance analysis, rider and jockey wellbeing and factors which influence rider reaction times.
3. Reliability assessment: across equestrian science and veterinary physiotherapy; applying statistical techniques to test the reliability and validity of accepted industry practices and proposing standardised tests to promote evidence informed practice e.g. posture assessment, range of movement post therapeutic interventions, application of technology to facilitate objective and valid outcome measures.
4. Human-animal interaction: exploration of the impact of animals on human wellbeing and how human interactions influence animal, specifically equine, welfare.
