“Ten Must Know Tips About Feeding Horses”

 

1) Water
 – 8-10 Gallons 1000 lbs (pound) horse
– 1 gallon = 100 lbs (pound) body weight

 

2) Know what nutrients are required
– Energy
– Lactating mares = racehorse

 

3) Understand the horse’s nutrient requirement for those nutrients
– Young = maintain plus growth

 

4) Understand feed intake
– Forage 1 % of body weight can eat (1.5%) per day
– 2.5% – 3% of body weight per day can eat 3.5% of body weight

 

5) Feed by weight and not volume
– How much does a scoop weigh

 

6) Frequency of feeding
– Minimum 3 times a day in no access to pasture hay 1 hour before grain
– Never feed more than 4 lbs (pound) concentration any given feeding

 

7) Read a feed tag
– 10% protein
– Feeding directions
– What horse was this feed designed for
– Higher fat more energy, fibre, NO OXIDES

 

8) Understand all horse do not require grain or a concentrate
– Horses need roughage

 

9) Understand supplementation
– General vitamin and mineral
– Good salt, trace minerals
– Specific hoof supplement, joints etc for individual horses
