“Ten Points For Riding A Confident Cross Country Round”

1. Train any cross country exercises that involve lines and accuracy on the arena in addition to on a cross country course.
– More technical?
– As a rider you control line and pace
– The horses job is to jump the fence

2. Be thorough in building your horse’s confidence. Always teach your horse to walk and trot small ditches, banks, and water first.
– Technical fences on arena first

3. Do the work required to ensure both you and your horse are fit enough.
– Introduction and pre-introduction 4 times a week

4. Pay attention in your course walk, and if you’re nervous walk it at least twice.
– The more times you walk (a cross country walk), the smaller the fences look

5. Visualise your Cross Country Round
– Sports Physiology awareness

6. Work out a routine for getting ready on the day. This includes making sure you have everything laid out for cool down and post-cross country care.
– Practice and Experience
– Iceboots, electrolyte paste

7. Warm yourself up before getting on to warm your horse up.
– Increase heart rate in warm up

8. Have a rough plan for how you will warm your horse up, but be prepared to change it if you need to.

10. Once on course, find your rhythm and enjoy it.
