“Ten Tips to Prepare For Your Lunging Assessment”
Pre-requisites: fenced, level, good footing, horse trained for the job, appropriate gear
1) Check area
– Check arena before lesson
– Gate closed
– Obstacles in the way
– Witch’s hats
– Jumps
– Observers – arms and legs
2) Lunge line/rein
– Loops or folds?
– Loops in lunge line too small – tangled in hand
– Loops in lunge line to large – above the knee
– When sorting the lunge, keep contact/ control of the horse
3) Handling of the whip
– Tail lower than the handle
– Horizontal whip, resting end of whip under elbow & hold further down
– Under your elbow, behind the horse
– Keep whip off the ground
4) Cracking whip
– Upset horse
– Upset other horses
– Upset student
– Not a good look
5) Triangle
– In front of the horse – horse can stop and turn
– Behind the horse – wandering
6) Have direction when you lunge, not drifting/ wandering
– Learn to keep one foot still
– Then learn about walking on a circle
7) Walk forward, not backwards
– Watch the rider
– Watch where you are going – sideways is better than backwards
8) Watch horses body language
– About to do a transition
– About to turn in
9) Wearing tracks in arena
– Round yard helps to learn
– When you can do this task well, it is in an arena
– Footing should be level, could cause injury to the horse
– Stay away from walls in arena
10) Alternate sides
– Horse is usually better balanced on left – complete beginner or nervous riders
– As with all work, both sides of the horse should be worked evenly
