“Ten Reasons Why Pilates is Perfect for Riders”
1) Awareness
– Proprioception, our awareness of where our body is, awareness equals clearer communication between horse and rider.
2) Posture
– Posture and alignment influences every aspect of your riding. Correct posture and alignment promotes healthy biomechanics and function and is integral to riding longevity.
3) Core and dynamic stability
– Riders need to remain stable despite constant movement and disturbances from the horse.
4) Suppleness
– Strength and stability are very important, but suppleness plays a major role as the rider’s suppleness influences the horse and vice versa.
5) Breathing
– The diaphragm plays an important role in dynamic core stability, also Pilates teaches conscious breath control which is very useful in many situations when you are riding.
6) Balance & Adaptability
– Encompasses two things: Muscular symmetry. Our ability to physically balance.
– is the body’s ability to quickly adjust to constantly changing situations without a decline in performance. Many Pilates exercises have balance challenges and variations in movement patterns, these are two of the best ways to teach the body to be more adaptable.
7) Healthy biomechanics and function
8) Injury prevention
– Cross-training to enhance performance and offset repetitive movement patterns. Improves movement efficiency and joint congruency, increases dynamic control, improves flexibility and suppleness.
9) Rehabilitation after injury
– A great way to assist or accelerate a physical therapy rehabilitation program. Pilates equipment can be used to support and assist, or challenge, when the client is ready to progress.
10) It’s great fun!
– And it can improve the health and longevity of both you, your riding and your horse!
