“Ten Steps for Further Foal Handling”

– Understand Pressure/Release Principals (light signal first then stronger till first step then instantly release) and Classical Condition Principles

– Pressure angle clock (See image above)

– Foal can be touched/groomed neck, back, rump and face, with little anxiety  (eyes, nostrils, ears flicking, temperature)

– Can be maneuvered near the mare using cradle technique

– Can be groomed/touched around head, face, nose (mimic head collar placement)

– Put both mare and foal’s rumps in a corner/wall, on mare’s rear side (wall on off side)

– Apply halter close to mare, without lead rope

–  Attach lead rope

–  Pay close attention to foals front leg placement (apply pressure at 20 degrees to front)

–  Reward every yield attempt – biggest reward is to release (4-5 repetitions)
