“Ten Things to Remember About Proofing the Aids”

1) Ensure all pressure release systems are intact and able to withstand changes in context (on the ground) – Stop, Go, Back, Park, and Yield – Instinct – Slight changes in contact

2) Check self carriage status of these aids – horse continues to do what he is asked to do

3) Repeat and consolidate these, under saddle. Walk to trot, trot to walk. Evaluate pressure Differences Ie;resistance

4) Now before we depart the round yard, check that we can go up two paces and down to paces without too much resistance (ie delay)

5) Check the self carriage status of each  pace

6) Can your horse remain obedient to the aids, when you have stood still for a period?

(Time Context ie time proofing)

7) Examine self carriage state when you change tempo, increases and decreases.

8) For the first ride outside it may be wise to have a quiet companion horse to go with. Also try to ensure no dramatic changes in context, i.e. weather, noises, conditions.

9) Keep it simple, and make the first tour beyond the yard somewhere the horses already familiar with.

10) When your riding out keep the questions easier than they were in the yard.

REMEMBER

The KISS principle

Choose the best time for your first ride out with appropriate company

The more relaxed the horse the longer you can ride for

Never be afraid to dismount and do ground work

The holy grail is the self carriage state

Be mindful of the progressive training pyramid:

1/ basic response, 2/obedient, 3/straight, 4/rhythm, 5/Connection or contact, 6/proof

Avoid accidental blending of opposites i.e. rein and leg at the same time

At the end of your ride evaluate what Sections of the work were great, good ,and below average.

If there were any below average sections, repeat the same Ride next time.

Remember where were the circumstances created a default in your turn ,stop or go buttons, or a combination of these.

(Your horse will remember where do you?)
