“Ten Points to Remember When Training Your Horse”
1 – The timing of pressure and the release of pressure will train whatever is occurring when the release occurs
2 – Reward every good try by the release of pressure, such as scratching and a rest break to reinforce the correct answer
3 – 5 to 7 repetitions in a row is plenty to end your session on
4 – Think carefully about how your aids are applied and what location on the horses body they effect.
5 – Mimic where ever possible aids on the ground with the same aids you wish to use when you are under saddle
6 – Change only one thing at a time when training your horse
7 – Stop, turn and reverse are all done with rein signals
8 – Never use rein and leg aids at the same time as it can cause confusion.
(one before the other or after one another) almost simultaneously
9 – Your horse will commonly use forward step/s to escape. If the horse is allowed to go forward this could manifest into something more determined.
– Single learning event involves fear
10 – If your stop and go signals/ aids are not working, there is no point continuing with further training
