“Ten Benefits of Lunging and Ways to Improve Your Lunging”

 

 

1) Environment
– Small enclosed level space
– Round or square.
– Not slippery or boggy/heavy.

 

2) Type & size of yard relevant to the horse & level of training.

 

3) PPE Gear
– No hanging jewellery
– Boots, gloves & hat (safety or sun)

 

4) Lunging aids
– Lunge lead & caveson, whip, jaw/strap

 

5) Saddle cloth & roller
– Bridle & passoa.
– Side reins . Gogue. etc
– Boots where necessary to stop interference injuries

 

6) Poles
– Assist with balance and elasticity

 

7) Reasons for lunging
– When trying new gear
– Checking for soundness
– Inspection of movement

 

8) Warming up
– Making sure the horse is settled and on the aids to ride
– Training dressage & short grids
– Spooky areas & obstacles
– Training the rider’s position & seat

 

9)Good safe work practice
– Keep lunge lead out in front of the horse & step over it
– To prevent being dragged don’t ever wrap the leads or reins around your hands
– Improve your technique
– Give and take

 

10. The same as riding
– Change the size of your circle to assist with balance.
– Give the horse many breaks and changes of rein.
– Position of your body & lead , closer or further away, in front or behind the eye effects your horse .
– Your manner & eyes are very influential
