“Ten Steps To Bringing Your Horse Back to Work”

1. Check physical health and fitness
– why was the horse off work? (injury – horse or rider)

2. The Engagement Zone
– assess your horse’s emotional and ability to concentrate
– this will depend on age, history, reasons for break

3. Start small
– bring horse in for a groom and a feed

4. Begin with ground work
– give to the bit and shoulder control

5. Building your bubble of communication
– why ground work is so important
– Engagement zone – head up, relaxation, safety

6. Graduate to long-reining
– why not lunging? Discuss Fit vs Educated

7. Can I ride that?
– Practicing those behaviours that you want in a ridden horse (transitions, balance, softness) while observing safely from the ground

8. Establish a routine (still in ‘safe’ area)
– ground work, long-reining, short ride, ground work

9. Enlarge your area of work
– begin with long-reining outside the area (e.g. from round pen to arena or arena to field)

10. Gradually shorten your ground work and long-reining times and continue with longer rides
