“Establishing a Track System for Horses, Ten Things to Remember“
1. Make it wander as much as possible and have dog/coyote proof perimeter fences.
2.Make fences very visible and very safe; build flexibility into the plan.
3. Have feed stations spread out all around the track(s).
4. Always have more feeders than the number of horses.
5. Put drinking water sources in several spots.
6. Provide multiple shelters with many options for shade and safety in storms (ours are unique).
7. Use enrichments to occupy and enhance the horses’ lives like hills, sand piles, green spaces, etc.
8. Have varying surfaces to build hoof health.
9. Plan areas for introducing new horses and know their personalities; solar lights all around help new horses see boundaries at night.
10. Workable track dimensions and lack of corners help horses keep from getting crowded or penned.
