“Ten Parts of a Simple System of Caring For and Handling Horses”
(that empowers owners and soothes horses through compassion and understanding)
Dharmahorse have establish a simple system of caring for and handling horses that empowers owners and soothes horses through compassion and understanding. Bonding with a horse requires a circle of understanding composed of “Ask, Listen, Direct, Support” and this is true in the care (what does this horse need to nourish his body, let Katharine provide what he needs), in healing (what hurts, what happened, let me support your healing) and in the handling and training (do you understand, how can I direct your attention, let me show you how we can dance).

Katharine is launching a program called “Bonded Horsemanship” and it is all about simplifying and using a heart, breath oriented approach to handling and caring for horses. Our health care is pretty basic, from prioritizing clean water, feeding hay based diets and providing Himalayan salt and herbs for minerals, we then make exercise a part of daily life. We believe in mostly self-trimming, bare hooves (if enough exercise is provided). We have implemented a track system at our new stable yard.
The healing is totally focused upon addressing causes of disorders and supporting the body’s innate ability to heal itself.
Our handling/connecting/riding methods are actionable, individualized approaches to bonding with a horse, earning trust and developing joy. With our “well of experiences” model, we use a spiral with horses in hand, under saddle and in the stable to move a them from one comfort zone to an expanded comfort zone through focus and compassion, defusing the flight “zone” and the “fight” zone incrementally. Roots and Branches intertwines us with the horse while riding to create a shared center.
We have spent decades focusing upon being non-toxic in our practices, from environment to emotions with horses. Now, in the Bonding Model, we stop focusing on what we DO NOT do or want and throw all of our energy to what we DO and what we WANT.
