“Ten Observational Insights in Behaviour of Foals”

Much of your herd dynamic evaluation work internationally focuses on yearlings at auctions and horses of racing or breeding age, do you offer services for the evaluation of foals?

1) When your evaluating foals or weanlings, is there a testing process similar to what you might do for older horses or is there something entirely different?

2) Because these horses are so young, what sort of things are you looking to identify?

3) Can you ascertain anything when observing the relationship between mare & foal?

4) When it comes to identifying earmarks of behavior, do you find “behavioral stamping” to leave any significant mark?

5) How much change in patterns of behavior can be expected as the horse grows, will he or she dramatically alter “who” they are?

6) Thinking about the long-term picture of this snapshot in youth, are there markers that you can unveil that give a clue to a horse’s future development?

7) I know you have written a great deal about how the environment affects horses in training, keeping, and overall competition, how much can you learn about a young horse and their interaction with the environment and each other?

8) Is it possible to determine, behaviorally, in youth if a given foal will develop a sense of independence or a sense of dependency within their herd dynamic?

9) Are there clues to a horse’s future athletic aptitude, psychologically, found within their herd dynamic in youth?

10) Is athletic ability and leadership innate, a learned behavior collected along the way or is it nurtured and developed?

Where can folks read more about this very unique aspect of horses and get in touch with you?
