“Ten Points of a Top Class Horse”
1) TEMPERAMENT
A calm relaxed horse will listen to what you want where an excitable or highly strung animals first reaction won’t necessarily be what you want. I like a calm intelligent horse not to be confused with a quiet dumb horse.
2) TYPE & CONFORMATION
– I look for a horse with a long hip short coupled and a good sloping shoulder which should stand over a lot of ground whilst not being long in the back. I like a horse with their wither slightly higher than their rump. An uphill ride is way more comfortable than a down hill ride.
3) MOVEMENT
– A horse must be able to move in all gaites walking must overstride without clipping and walk like they are going somewhere. The canter should be comfortable and a pleasure to ride all day if necessary. At the gallop the horse should remain soft and tractable whilst moving at full pace.
4) PRESENCE
– All of the top horses I have had and the best of what I have seen have got that look at me presence about them. They know their job and enjoy doing it. Whether it is a top show horse or an elite campdrafter or the best polocrosse horses they all have a special presence about them.
5) NATURAL ABILITY
– able to do things naturally without a lot of teaching. I like to watch my young horses playing in the paddock. You can see the ones that are naturally balanced and have the moves.
6) HEART
– Will this horse give me everything it has when we compete or will it always be giving me less.
7) BROAD FOREHEAD AND FILLED IN ABOVE THE EYES
– The broader the forehead the more brains is the theory I work on. The physical reason for this is that the eyes are then set broader as well giving the horse more peripheral vision.
8) BIG EYES
– I always believe you can tell a lot from looking at the head of a horse even though people say it is only something the hang the bridle off. I like a big kind eye. Again physically this is because the more a horse can see the less worried they are. Little piggy eyed horses have given me grief in the past and I won’t touch them.
9) SHORT CANNON BONES
– Regardless of height I like a horse with short cannon bones . They seem to have less leg problems and remain sound for much longer even when in constant work.
10) ANGLES ARE IMPORTANT
– A good black hoof with plenty of wall. Most performance horses work hard and twist and screw around on their hooves. Too keep shoes on you need to be able to nail into a good strong hoof. There is no argument black hooves are stronger than white hooves. I have shod a lot of horses to come to this conclusion.
