My proudest moments have been on competitive trail rides, where partnerships between riders and their horses are judged on the quality of your ride.
Sometimes people lose focus on the fact that their horse is their partner. You cannot achieve success on the trail or in the ring without working together.
Clinton Anderson has a series of books I used to read about establishing respect and control. For younger readers, I highly recommend “Black Beauty” which taught me at a young age to respect the horse as a sentient, full feeling being.
At this stage in life I am learning to age gracefully myself. I feel I am not conditioned to ride, but I love writing about horses and farm life. Animals are so fascinating. They are our partners in this world, and it only makes sense to respect them and learn from them.
Our horses are our partners. If we treat them with respect, proper diet and exercise, and let them know we will take care of them when they are suffering, then we will have them as friends for life. How we view our horses also translates into how we view the people around us, how we approach obstacles ourselves, remain resilient, and maintain our own self-worth. Humor enables deep empathy; it is important to appreciate both our own whimsical humor and that of our horses.
