1. Timeline
– if they are out for a few months or in some cases a year or more; let this determine the horse’s accommodation for that period. Stable or small paddock!!
2. Accommodation
– stable or small paddock? Some soft tissue injuries and even broken bones can handle some movement or even require movement for the healing process. If the horse can move a bit, it is better for their mind anyway. Healthy mind = healthier horse
3. Change their diet
– Zoe has seen many horses go on rest but their diet is not adjusted to suit that. Do not leave them on a high energy or performance food. Get it changed to a low energy, vitamin balanced diet or a balancer aimed at horses in low or no work. Old hay and ad lib water.
4. Give them the time they need
– Generally people tend to be in such a hurry to get them back into work. We tend to worry about when that is possible again. Owning a horse carries an injury risk, therefore we are responsible to see that through if and when that happens.
5. Positive energy is important
– they are energy animals. Treat them like they are sick they will probably be or become sicker. Be their light!
6. Environment
– in an ideal world it should be as quiet as possible. If horses are coming and going all the time especially to their pasture, it can be upsetting. If there is lots of traffic including humans in and around this can also be unsettling. Calmness is the key to cure.
7. Mix the horses routine
– Why? Routines can create stress in horses, pawing of the ground, kicking at doors and so forth and all can affect the healing of an injury. Especially if leg related. Feed them at different times of the day and so forth so as not to teach the horse these assumptions.
8. Provide boredom breakers
– not every day but a few days a week we can hang edible trees, fruits and vegetables on a rope. Great resources available on the internet.
9. Horses are way more than riding
– there is so much you can teach a horse on the ground and especially during a work period that can improve partnership, relationship and basic skills. Use this time to do that. It is very rewarding.
10. Horse’s outcome & future
– maybe they cannot be ridden anymore? Do not give up. There are many options including people looking for a companion for their own horses. Also with the way modern raining has evolved, there are many ways to train a horse on the ground from basic skills through to very high level, even high school.
