Case study 01 “Frankie”
Frankie is a 13 years old, rescue case from the doggers yard.
He’s a chestnut gelding, believed to an Australian riding pony.
Summary: He is very scared of strangers, more so of whips and ropes etc.
Under saddle, very afraid of crops/whips, even your elbows sticking outwards!
He stops very well, but doesn’t go from leg signals. Once he does go, reins fail immediately, and he bolts!!
Finding out what he can do
1) Establish stop/go/and park in hand, in site (his body) specific locations
2) Confirm responses in round yard and riding arena.
3) Check park with desenitisation tasks ( ie quiet first, gradually increase frequency of sight/sound/touch) me moving, ropes/whip habituation etc
4) Check park in self-carriage whilst mounting/dismounting
5) Check reverse steps, immediate and diagonally even
6) Apply leg or whip taps, which ever has been trained on the ground
7) Check responses persistence (self-carriage)
8) Once self-carriage at a tempo has been achieved, then start to practice making the walk faster and slower.
9) Now ready to practice walk/trot, trod/walk transitions
10) Apply Step 7 and Step 8 to trot

Would really like a podcast covering dealing with Brumbies. Particularly as so many are being trapped atm as eradication plans are well underway. Many of those either in the roping and chasing or the ones wanting to be a re homer are expecting them to be like a ‘ domesticated’ horse and manage them unfairly for their lack of human interaction. Having someone such as Jonna explaining the approach , the handling , the training of a Brumby would be a unique opportunity to help more Brumbies and people.
Happy to take Jonna up to a unique place to see Brumbies, come on Jonna a little road trip .
